Normal?

So we are booked to collect Cokes after 4pm, phone goes at around 1pm… Uh Oh, somethings’ wrong?
“Hi, all is well, we’ve cleaned and flushed out all her swelling, tried to give her a quick walk but she’s not interested, she’s getting a bit distressed, could you come and collect her?”

Straight in the car and off to pick her up.
Now I should say, that in our house, stress is common place, none of us like it, we just like things to plod along, no drama.
But the more we attempt to keep it this way, the more drama descends upon us *sigh*
It was quite amusing to hear that even our doggy member of the family was having none of it. Out under anesthetic, within minutes of being woken up, just wants to get home.
“She won’t eat anything, she just doesn’t want to know!”
As soon as she got home she was eating and drinking and panting, then was up and down, until eventually tiredness got the better of her and she flumped out. Then wide awake at 2am, just as normal heh.

Anyway, back to the vets.
The door opened to see the vet in full battle dress, complete with mask on, mumbling words to come and get her, I think.
Cokes looked like something out of a world war 1 battle scene!
Cone around her head, blood all over her fur and inside the cone, running to standstill and get out of there. I don’t blame her.
At the side of her head a huge two inch gash/slice, wide open!
What the?

All the puss and matter has been flushed out, more is to come, so the cut is left open as it’s on the head, later I read that this is a “tropical drain” so that it can heal from within and the waste can ooze out.
What caused this sudden swelling to her head, spreading around her throat and making her lips swell up like a drunk balloon artists party trick?
“We found nothing inside, but when we shaved her we found lots of grass seeds in her fur!”

Sundays vet examination (£113 cost) and both of us constantly checking her swelling, over four days, came across not one single grass seed.
Could it be a bee sting as her lips swelled up?
“No, it was probably a seed got into her skin!”

The good news, is that the vet is “confident” a biopsy doesn’t need sending off (“It would cost you an extra £120”) and it is more an infection than the serious thing we were all worried about!

Still, set off home, straight into the car, panting all the way home and out for a leak, then shaking her head with blood and puss everywhere.
For the next 7 days, we have to wash and clean her, more or less hand feeding her, plenty of water, anti-biotics and pain killer (think doggy calpol)
The bill was originally sent through at £539, then ten minutes later, revised bill was £640, a quick call established the first bill was not cheaper as we’d collected her over two hours earlier, but that they had applied “cat anesthetic instead of dog anesthetic!”

Very stressful day for all concerned, not least our Cokes.
Personal care all week while the 2 inch wound on her face is wide open and another vet visit in a weeks’ time.
Cokes is flat out and snoring her head off as I write, thankfully.

May your day/week be stress free.
